Blood Drive Provides Learning Opportunities

Third and fourth graders have been studying the systems of the human body in science. As part of the cirulatory system, they investigated the role of blood inside the body. This research coincided with the Upper School Blood Drive. Students promoted the event by creating and then displaying informatinal posters all ove campus encouraging people to donate blood. The highlight of the unit involved a "field trip" to the US Blood Drive where students were able to ask medical personnel and donors questions about the process and experience. Lower School parents and School Nurse Mary Mech donated blood and talked with students throughout the process. Student written and audio reflections, drawings, and discussions made it clear that this made the queasy topic of the circulatory system more concrete for the students. This event was coordinated with Filley Howe '07, the MICDS student organizer and Dorothy Moore, the MICDS Community Service Coordinator. The next blood drive will be in November.
