Student Gardeners
Upper School students installed sod and planted 50 tulip bulbs in the Beasley Garden as part of their advisory service project. That would have been two days of work for Beasley students.
By providing the labor to install the 2.9 square meters (32 square feet or 13 sheets) of sod in the garden, the Upper School students have allowed for future teaching and learning opportunities in the garden. The sod will be used to reduce the erosion of the dirt in that area as well as fight back the pervasive English Ivy. Students will use the area to observe the bunnies, gerbils, and Guinea pig in a more natural setting. The growth of the grass will be monitored and an environmentally friendly method will be used to keep it trimmed. The grass will also add some texture to the mostly brick and rock landscape in the section near the concrete steps.
The bulbs will be one of the first things growing in our garden, and the red color will brighten those early spring days as vegetables will be planted. It will also keep students from planting in the wrong spots as there will already be flowers there.
Thanks to the US students and Katie Voss for seeking ways to contribute the to the Beasley Science Curriculum. Their service is appreciated.
